We love working with coffee and we have worked as baristas since 2011. When we enrolled for barisiting job in 2011, most coffee shops were conducting inhouse training for new employees. The coffee industry has changed in Kenya as well as globally. Most employers prefer to hire ready baristas or at least rookie barista who needs a little bit of polishing. Well, there arent enough coffee artisan colleges in Kenya to compete with the rapidly growing coffee industry.
After high school, most youths from struggling families in Kenya are let out into the world to decide their own fate. Ofcourse this leaves them vulnerable to vices, since they dont have hirable skills. We have pulled up our own savings (USD 2150) to start up a college in a local, fast growing town in Kenya. We need to raise the balance of USD5500 to start up. It takes aproximately a month to train a rookie barista. It cost an estimate of USD150 to train a barista. Intial start up for the college inlcuding equipments and training space add up to USD 5,500, Awareness budget for the first 3 months is at USD 2,000. We need to cover the lease for the space for at least 6 months at USD 1,200. That leaves us with USD 1,300 to train the first 8 baristas for the first month, who will reimburse the training cost for another 8 baristas and so on. This leaves a small operational margin for expansion. Ofcourse with a posiitive refferal we will need to reduce our awareness budget to accommodate for students.
dWe believe that we can brighten up the lives of this youth by teaching them coffee skills, with these skills they can juggle their way through college or make a permanent career in the coffee coffee industry. For more information on the operation plan, please feel free to write us at [email protected]
