One week after a case of child abuse in Butagaya subcounty Jinja District shocked and horrified the country, a similar crime has occurred in the very same trading center. A 26-year-old Kasifa Namukose, a mother of two, has been arrested for pouring a pan of hot water on her 3-year-old stepdaughter. The incident occurred in Nawampanda trading center, not far from the place at which another little girl, Aisha Namuwaya, was allegedly burned by her stepmother on the 30th of May 2020. The victim of the latest crime is Agnes Nandaula, a food vendor in Matuumu. She claims that her stepmother attacked her and attempted to cut her with a knife on Saturday, accusing her of stealing sugarcane. Nandaula says that when she refused to confess to the theft, Rosette Mbabazi poured hot water all over her back. Mbabazi is in Police custody at Jinja Central Police Station. During interrogation she said she didn't intend to burn Nandaula and only acted in self-defense. She claimed that the girl had attempted to hit her with an axe and so she threw a pan of water on her to stop the violence. Agnes Nandaula is admitted in Jinja Referral Hospital with extensive burns to her back. Nandaula's biological mother, Jane Nabulime, rushed to the hospital to look after her daughter. She says she divorced the girl's father because he consistently battered her. Nabulime claims that although she knew her ex-husband was abusive, she had no other choice than to leave her daughter in his care because she is too poor to do so herself. Matius Turyasingura, the Child and Family Protection Officer for Kiira Region Uganda, says the police are looking for Nandaula's father, who fled the scene after the attack, for questioning about his complicity in the crime. We appeal to friends and Well-wishers to contribute both in cash and kind as we strive to restore Aisha Namuwaya’s life who is in severe pain with no funds for medication to undergo treatment.
