Babirye clutches her books, her stomach twisting with anxiety. It's that time of the month again, and the thought of school fills her with dread. The single toilet shared by hundreds of girls is a dilapidated mess, often overflowing and lacking any privacy. The walk there is a muddy trek, especially during the rainy season. There's no running water, making it impossible to maintain basic hygiene. Aisha feels embarrassed and uncomfortable all day, her concentration shattered. She misses crucial lessons, and her grades are starting to slip. She dreams of becoming a doctor, but sometimes wonders if she'll even be able to finish school.
Babirye's story is not unique. Many girls at Namungalwe Parents Secondary School face the same challenges. And it's not just the girls. Morgan, a bright student in Senior 3, recently missed several days of school due to a bout of diarrhea, likely caused by the lack of clean water and proper sanitation.
The lack of adequate WASH facilities at Namungalwe Parents Secondary School creates a significant barrier to education. It contributes to absenteeism, particularly among girls, and creates a learning environment that is neither healthy nor dignified. The risk of waterborne illnesses is ever-present, threatening the health and well-being of the entire student body.
But there is hope. Our WASH project aims to transform the lives of students at Namungalwe Parents Secondary School by constructing a new block of gender-segregated toilets, complete with handwashing facilities and access to clean, running water. This will provide Babirye and other girls with the privacy and dignity they deserve, allowing them to focus on their education without fear or embarrassment. It will also create a healthier learning environment for all students, reducing the spread of illness and promoting better hygiene practices.v
