There are many elders, both male and female, in this location of Longido District in the Arusha Region. This District is located about 82 kilometers from Arusha City, along the Arusha to Nairobi road. It takes approximately 1h 11m to drive from Arusha to Longido. Their tribe is the Maasai of Tanzania. There is a problem facing many elders and their caregivers: they need to be supported in their daily living of feeding, clothing, and even medical treatment. We want to support those elders and their caregivers too. We cannot separate them because they live together and they are very poor. Many caregivers are physically able, but without economic activities which they can work on. We want to give them such sustainable support. The caregivers can run a small business to support them. Small businesses are one of the sustained supports: we want to make them keep poultry at their homes. The indigenous chicken is desirable for this location. This type of chicken can adapt well to the climate and environmental conditions of the area. The type of chicken can grow and multiply easily and make the elders (and caregivers) have good meals (eggs and meat) and money after selling the products. We want to support each household with 8 chickens, for starting. Then we expect that there will be natural brooding of chicks and within 8 months, each household will be maintaining at least 50 chickens (and chicks). The elders then can sell at least 100 eggs every week. Also, they can eat chicken meat weekly (one chicken). Even for every day, there will be two eggs to eat. This support project needs our monitoring and hence regular visitation. We need to build small chicken sheds and do seminars. The following is the proposed budget to support ten households. Summarized Budget for the project above; 1. The number of households to start with is 10 2. Costs of constructing a chicken house, is Tzs 700,000/=unit cost x 10 households =Tzs 7,000,000/= 3. Each house – hold to start with 8 chickens, (inclusive of a single cock). So, 10 house – holds x 8 chicken x Tzs 20,000 (price per price)= Tzs 1,600,000/= 4. Vaccine program (for all the ten households will be, 6 times per year x Tzs 20,000/= (total costs) = Tzs 120,000/= 5. Deworming program (for all the ten households). 4 times per year x Tzs 20,000/= (unit costs) = Tzs 80,000/= 6. Initial feeding costs (for six months). 120 grams per chicken per day x 80 chicks’ x 30 days x 6 months. Which is 1728kg x Tzs 1,000 per kg = 1,728,000/= 7. Transport costs; official visits to be twice per month. Thus, 24 visits (per year) x Tzs 60,000 transport for two staff = Tzs 1,440,000/= 8. Monitoring & Supervision costs Tzs 2,000,000/= per year 9. Over-head costs Tzs 500,000/= The total costs will amount to Tzs 8,168, 000/= (Eight million one hundred sixty-eight thousand in Tzs), which is equivalent to USD ($3448.12)
