On February 27th, 2020, John underwent a successful carotid body tumor surgery with bypass at ECMC. Although the surgery was complicated, he was expected to make a full recovery without further issues. Unfortunately, the pathology results revealed that the tumor was malignant and metastatic. After genetic testing at Roswell, John was diagnosed with Hereditary paraganglioma-pheochromocytoma Syndrome, an incurable condition that requires constant monitoring and treatment. Recently, a scan revealed two new tumors in John's abdomen - one in or on his liver and the other between his pancreas and vena cava. A high-risk team has been formed for his surgery at Roswell on March 6th. John's medical care has already been quite expensive with many co-pays for testing, imaging, and doctor appointments, not to mention his neck surgery in August. Although we are hopeful that the Roswell team can effectively remove both tumors, there may be additional out-of-network treatment required at places such as the Cleveland Clinic or Mayo Clinic, which insurance may not cover. This could result in medical expenses exceeding $20,000 for surgery alone. We are asking for your help to cover John's future medical and related expenses, including necessary travel expenses. We appreciate any funds donated to assist John and his family during this difficult time. Additionally, prayers for strength and healing are always appreciated. Thank you for your support!
