The Kachikally crocodile pool is located in the heart of Bakau, Gambia, about 10 miles (16 km) from the capital Banjul. It is one of three sacred crocodile pools used as sites for fertility rituals. The pool currently contains 86 crocodiles aging from 5 to 80 years old. The most famous attraction is the "white crocodile" the oldest crocodile in the park who suffers from albinism who is believed by the local people to be a source of prosperity and a sign of luck.
Kachikally is actually widely known for its healing powers and as a place where people gather to pray for blessings.
Crocodiles are allowed to roam freely, and can be approached and touched by visitors. Crocodiles found in the wild are sometimes taken to and reared at the holy pool. Kachikally is a privately owned crocodile pool belonging to our family , the Bojang family one of the founding families and works on donations.
However, the visitors and their small donations have drastically dropped since the pandemic and with no support whatsoever from the Gambian government , we are having a hard time to feed the crocodiles and we unfortunately can not afford to let the crocodiles give birth anymore, the eggs are being destroyed every week.
Therefore , we have decided to raise a crowdfunding campaign to help us manage the daily expenses of the pool for a year and serenely wait for the tourists to comeback!
