Pacific leatherbacks are at high risk for extinction. Help secure nesting sights to ensure hatched eggs reach the sea. For this endangered species Trinidad and Tobago is a major nesting sight for leatherbacks. We are happy to see adult turrles return to lay eggs but must ensure thet the servival rate is high to keep the numbers of the turtles up.
After reaching the sea these turtles have to servive to reach adulthood their natrual preditors include sharks, killer whales,commacial fishing. They also at times mistake plastic bags for jellyfish which kill them. Also sometimes ungauarded nest sights fall pray to locals who steal the eggs that are eaten as a delicacy.
