This is bwindi, one of the last rain forests in uganda. Impenetrable, that's what people call it here. Bwindi is a home to the mighty mountain gorillas. This species is threatened, and the forests offer less and less protection as danger increased for them as humans get closer to them and together with Corona virus/covid19.
Tourism used to give great support to their protection indirectly by improving the livelihoods of the native human communities. 20% of the revenue collected from Bwindi impenetrable national park was always directed to the local communities and $10 of all permits from visitors to bwindi N. P
With emergence of covid19 in March 2019 in uganda, there was a total national lock down and Bwindi NP was closed with no tourists in order to control the spread of the pandemic to both the humans and gorillas around and in to the NP respectively.
In that regard, the sorounding communities directly lost employment as 90% are dependants of the park's tourism activities. This however, led to increased poaching into the the NP for for especially food resources for survival. In just between February and June of 2019, Uganda Wildlife Authory (UWA) recorded 367 poaching cases than the the previous year. Rafiki, one of the famously known silver backs, was murdered by poacher by spearing and the poacher was imprisoned for 11years.
Although the tourism was reopened later on in 2019, the sector was massively hit down, businesses were lost as most capital was done off during lock down, and the directly employees lost their jobs. Besides the numbers of tourists massively reduced as people from around the globe have limited their movement.
Remember the mountain gorilla is an endangered species with a population of about 1000 only in the whole world and Bwindi habours a half of their population!
This is why I call upon your noble support for its survival and protect it for the future generation.
We need to engage bwindi communities themselves to play that critical role of the gorilla protection
Therefore, as a passion, I seek your donation in this cause to: fund the community tourism projects and businesses,
Women groups initiatives around bwindi,
Youth projects and former poacher groups,
Buy for them reusable masks to prevent further spread of Corona viruses to the community and to the gorillas.
Remember the gorillas can not sit in self isolation and wait for symptoms to show
This is intended to provide tourism dependent communities with another form of income to help reduce poaching and encroachment on the forest and gorilla. And also make them stoll feel the importance of the NP and the gorilla as they are being protected or conserved.
The donations will be received by Akena Moses and
Your contribution shall be highly appreciated. For further information reach out at [email protected] or [email protected] or call +256782907701.
Thank you.
Regards.
