On February 14, some friends and I took a boat trip on the Banes coast (just outside Havana, Cuba). Bad weather and our inexperience as sailors made us lose control of the boat (made of sticks and Polyfoam) and we were left with no way to do anything. 6 hours later we were rescued by the Cuban border authorities more than 11 kilometers from the coast. After the rescue, we were interrogated for approximately 4 hours, the main question being: "Did you want to leave the country illegally?" After a long interrogation they came to the conclusion that obviously we were not trying to leave the country (Cuba) illegally. The process was left in legal limbo until a month later the news came to me from two officers of the border guard troops that I had to pay a fine of 3,000 Cuban pesos (approximately 125 usd). Thanks to Covid-19 I lost my job in a tourist travel agency and it is impossible for me to pay that amount of money. A month has passed and the fine has already doubled. El pasado 14 de febrero unos amigos y yo hicimos un paseo en bote en la costa de Banes (a las afueras de La Habana, Cuba). El mal tiempo y nuestra inexperiencia como marineros hizo que perdiéramos el control de la embarcación(hecha de palos y Poliespuma) y nos quedáramos sin manera de hacer nada. 6 horas después fuimos rescatados por las autoridades guarda fronteras cubanas a más de 11 kilómetros de la costa. Luego del rescate fuimos interrogados por aproximadamente 4 horas siendo la pregunta principal: “Ustedes se querían ir del país ilegalmente?” Luego de un largo interrogatorio llegaron a la conclusión que obviamente no estábamos intentando salir ilegalmente del país (Cuba). El proceso quedó en el limbo legal hasta que un mes después me llegó la noticia por parte de dos oficiales de las tropas guarda fronteras, que debía pagar una multa de 3000 pesos cubanos(aproximadamente 125 usd). Gracias al Covid-19 perdí mi trabajo en una agencia de viajes turísticos y me es imposible pagar esa cantidad de dinero. Ha pasado un mes y la multa ya se duplicó.
