In Bonthe Island Southern Sierra Leone, West Africa 3 out of every 5 girls aged 12-17 missed school every month when they are experiencing their monthly menstrual cycle. Because of their poverty level and traditional practice in their homes, these girls don't have the knowledge to hygienically take care of themselves when experiencing their menstrual periods. They mostly relied on traditional methods for care which is the use of cloths in place of pads to manage their menstruation flow. Because of these practices, the girls don't only face provocation among their peers in school, but they are also facing big health risks.
Through our community-Based initiative SEED-Sierra Leone we are establishing safe spaces in schools to teach girls life skills through mentors on how to take care of their menstrual cycle, and in addition, we are also supplying the girls with reusable sanitary pads.
We are launching a campaign to raise $ 3000 USD to support 1,000 girls with sanitary pads and conduct sessions to teach them how to take care of their menstrual cycle.
